A.M.D. Set to Introduce a New Chip for Laptops

Eager to declare its troubles behind it, the chip maker Advanced Micro Devices is ready for a new turf war with its rival, Intel.

A.M.D., which in April reported its sixth consecutive quarterly loss, plans to announce on Wednesday that it will start selling new power-conserving notebook chips with strong graphics and video abilities.

The company was scheduled to announce the availability of the new chip, named Puma, at the giant Computex computer show in Taipei, Taiwan. A.M.D. officials said they hoped the new chip would help the company maintain its share in the laptop market, which is roughly 15 percent. Intel’s share is about 85 percent, largely because of the success of its Centrino line.
